Missouri woman claims lawyer failed to procure damages

A Missouri woman has filed suit against the lawyer and the law firm who she claims failed to procure any damages for her after she was involved in a car accident.

E. Joyce Murray claims she suffered physical injuries and other damages after she was involved in a collision on April 14, 2006, in St. Clair County.

After her accident, Murray retained defendant Bradley L. Bakula of the law firm Becker, Dufour and Yarbrough to help her retrieve damages she claims she was due, according to the complaint filed March 31 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

However, Bakula allegedly failed to secure any type of compensation for Murray and failed to file her claim in a court of competent jurisdiction before the statute of limitations had expired, the suit states.

As a result, Murray received no compensation for her injuries and other damages, the complaint says.

"As a direct and proximate result of, and but for Defendant Bakula's careless and negligent acts or omissions, Plaintiff would have received an amount of compensation in excess of the sum of $50,000," the suit states.

In her two-count complaint, Murray is seeking a judgment in excess of $100,000, plus other relief the court deems just.

She will be represented by David C. Nelson and Nathan C. Lanter of Nelson and Nelson in Belleville.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-154.
