Put county checkbook online

To the Editor:

Open and transparent government is the best government. Chris Slusser, Republican county board member from Wood River, has proposed placing the Madison County check book online.

DuPage County, with over a million residents and a budget of over $500 million, has done this at no additional cost to the taxpayers.
They have been able to work out questions concerning privacy.

And, actually, there are some cost savings. Personnel time and expense and paper costs will be reduced for Freedom of Information Act requests made to the county.

Madison County Board Chairman Alan Dunstan has long been an advocate of more open and transparent government. This is just another step in achieving that goal.

Madison County Auditor Rick Faccin has stated he thinks it is a good, workable proposal.

I would encourage you to call or write Chairman Dunstan and/or your local county board member and ask them put the check book online, as soon as possible.

Chris Slusser should be commended for doing his research, making this proposal, and helping to save money and make government more open.
