Callis re-elected chief judge in Madison County

Ann Callis will remain chief judge of the Madison County Circuit.

According to a press release sent out by Callis' office Monday morning, she was unaninously re-elected to another term by her fellow circuit judges.

Callis' new term will begin May 1, 2010.

"I am honored by my colleagues' confidence, and I look forward to partnering with them in our dedication to serve the citizens of Madison County," Callis said in the release.

She highlighted the Third Circuit's continuing work with programs ranging from truancy court to mandatory mediation in medical malpractice suits.

Callis was the first woman elected to the circuit bench. She was first appointed to the bench as an associate judge in 1995. After a 1999 appointment to the circuit court, Callis won her seat a year later.

Callis became chief judge in 2006.

The new term will be her third.

Prior to becoming a judge, Callis practiced law in Belleville and Granite City. The daughter of well-known Madison County attorney Lance Callis, she also served as an assistant state's attorney.

Callis succeeded then-Madison County Circuit Judge Edward Ferguson as chief judge.
