Wet stair cause woman's severe and permanent injuries, says suit

A woman claims she became severely and permanently injured after slipping on a wet stair leading to the basement of a rental facility.

Christina Whitford filed a lawsuit March 1 in Madison County Circuit Court against Brian Stanley.

Whitford claims she attempted to descend stairs leading to the basement of premises she rented from Stanley at 2336 24th St. in Granite City when she slipped on a wet surface and fell on Sept. 14, 2008. A water leakage in the basement, which Stanley should have known about, caused the wet stair surface, according to the complaint.

Because of her fall, Whitford sustained injuries to her left shoulder and arm, experienced pain and suffering, incurred medical costs and cannot attend to her usual affairs and duties, the suit states.

She blames Stanley for causing her fall, saying he failed to provide a safe means of ingress and egress to the basement, failed to maintain the structural integrity of the steps, failed to properly maintain his premises, failed to timely address safety issues and failed to provide warning of a dangerous condition that existed on his premises.

Whitford seeks a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs.

Allan L. Napp of Schrempf, Kelly, Napp and Darr in Alton will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-216.
