American Express sues Godfrey man

A credit card company claims a Godfrey man racked up more than $50,000 worth of debt on his credit card, but has stopped making payments.

American Express Centurion Bank filed a lawsuit March 1 in Madison County Circuit Court against Michael McGinnis.

American Express claims McGinnis held an American Express Blue Cash card that enabled him to charge items. American Express sent monthly payments to McGinnis after he purchased the items, but it received no payments in return, according to the complaint.

Despite American Express demands that McGinnis repay the money he owes it, he has refused to do so, the suit states.

"By reason of the foregoing, American Express Centurion Bank is entitled to judgment against Defendant in the sum of $53,530.40, plus reasonable attorneys fees, pre-judgment interest which continues to accrue, late fees and costs and for such further relief as this Court deems proper," the complaint says.

Markoff and Krasny of Chicago will be representing American Express.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-211.
