Kankakee hospital, doctor named in St. Clair County wrongful death complaint

The wife of a deceased man has filed suit against Riverside Medical Center of Kankakee and one of its doctors, alleging the doctor failed to recognize and appropriately treat signs of sepsis.

Joyce A. Seddon claims Thomas Seddon was a patient of Dr. Scott C. Smithgall at Riverside on Jan. 29, 2008.

While Smithgall treated Thomas Seddon, he failed to recognize signs of sepsis, failed to treat Thomas Seddon for a known infection, failed to further investigate the source of the infection and failed to obtain an appropriate history of exposure to infection, according to the complaint filed Jan. 26 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

As a result, Thomas Seddon sustained sepsis, which caused him pain and suffering, disability, disfigurement, loss of enjoyment of a normal life and loss of income, the suit states. In addition he incurred medical costs before his death, the complaint says.

Thomas Seddon died on March 3, 2008, depriving his wife of consortium and of his services, companionship, comfort, instruction, guidance, counsel, training, love and support, she claims.

In the six-count suit, Joyce A. Seddon is seeking a judgment of more than $300,000, plus costs.

Joseph A. Bartholomew of Cook, Ysursa, Bartholomew, Brauer and Shevlin in Belleville will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-33.
