Cahokia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center sued over resident's care

A woman claims she received injuries after a Cahokia nursing home failed to provide acceptable care for her.

Velma H. Penberthy filed a lawsuit May 18 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Cahokia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Penberthy says she lived in the center located at 2 Annable Ct. from Aug. 18 until Dec. 29, 2008.

While there, Penberthy claims employees at the center failed to care for her as they should have by failing to develop an individualized comprehensive care plan for her with interventions in place to ensure she was kept clean to prevent infection in the skin of her abdominal folds.

Employees also failed to develop a comprehensive care plan for Penberthy to address her medical, nursing, mental and psychosocial needs, failed to describe the services that were to be provided that would maintain her highest physical, mental and psychosocial well-being and failed to use results of assessment to develop and revise the comprehensive plan of care, according to the complaint.

As a result of the employees' action, Penberthy was injured, although the suit does not specify her injuries.

Penberthy is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000.

Dennis M. Field of Strellis and Field in Waterloo will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-255.
