Former Norfolk Southern worker claims severe injuries

A former Norfolk Southern Railway Company employee is seeking more than $50,000 for alleged numerous repetitive traumas to which he claims he was subjected during his work for the company.

In his complaint filed on March 11 in Madison County Circuit Court, Tony G. Billings claims he suffered severe and permanent injuries to his back, spine, wrists and knees after his work repairing railroad tracks for Norfolk Southern.

Billings worked for the company from 1981 until 2008, the suit states.

In addition to his injuries, Billings experienced great pain and mental anguish, will lose money, experienced a greatly diminished earning capacity and incurred medical expenses, according to the complaint.

The railroad was negligent by failing to provide safe and suitable tools and equipment, by failing to provide Billings with necessary and proper equipment and personal protective equipment and by failing to provide necessary supervision, the suit states.

The company also negligently failed to warn Billings of the hazardous conditions, allowed unsafe practices to become standard, assigned Billings work it knew would result in his injury, assigned Billings work it knew was beyond his physical capacity, failed to provide a safe place to work and failed to furnish sufficient manpower to perform the task, Billings alleges.

In addition to the more than $50,000, Billings is seeking costs.

Gregory M. Tobin of Pratt and Tobin in East Alton will be representing him.
