Woman blames car in 'no parking' zone for accident

A woman who claims she was forced into another lane of traffic because of a car that was parked in a no parking zone, has filed suit over a resulting accident.

Laura Riley was driving her 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee south on Main Street near its intersection with Hillcrest Avenue in Alton on Aug. 15 when the incident occurred, according to the suit filed Jan. 21 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Because Sandra Cox had parked her 1996 GM Conventional Cab 4 in a no parking zone on Main Street, Riley claims she was forced to cross the center line to avoid striking the car.

Instead, she collided with the 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Lynette Passion Greer was driving north on Main Street, the suit states.

Because of the accident, Riley claims she has suffered an elbow fracture, great pain and mental anguish and has experienced a disability.

She has also lost her normal life and incurred medical expenses and property damage, according to the complaint.

Cox was negligent by parking her car in a no parking zone, by failing to keep a proper lookout for other vehicles on the street and by failing to park her car in a designated parking lot, the suit states.

Riley claims Greer negligently failed to keep her vehicle under control, failed to keep a proper lookout for other vehicles on the street, failed to stop her vehicle in time to stop a collision, failed to give a proper signal to warn of her approach, failed to reduce her speed to avoid an accident and drove her vehicle without adequate brakes.

In the two-count suit, Riley is seeking a judgment in excess of $100,000, plus costs.

Michael P. Glisson of Williamson, Webster, Falb and Glisson in Alton will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-0040.
