Root canal negligently performed, med mal suit claims

Ruth Dodd filed a medical malpractice complaint against Godfrey dentist Anna Smith, D.M.D. for alleged problems with a root canal performed July 18, 2006.

According to a suit filed May 13 in Madison County Circuit Court, Smith allegedly deviated from the standard of care by allegedly failing to finish the root canal procedure causing her to lose tooth number three and the need for dental implants.

Represented by Lance Mallon of Wood River, Dodd also claims Smith negligently failed to provide proper care and failed to provide proper charting of her ongoing treatment.

She claims the loss of the tooth and need for a tooth implant caused and continues to cause pain and suffering, disability and dental expenses.

Dodd is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus costs of the suit.

Hal Patton, M.D. of Edwardsville reviewed the case for Mallon and signed a certificate of merit stating "it is clear" that Smith failed to properly finish the root canal which resulted in the loss of her tooth.

Madison County Circuit Judge David Hylla has been assigned to the case.
