Med mal suit filed against SLU Hospital in Madison County

St. Louis University Hospital

A Texas woman filed a medical malpractice complaint against St. Louis University Hospital in Madison County Circuit Court April 3, alleging the hospital deviated from the standard of care when treating her.

Sandra Harris claims that on April 1, 2006 she was admitted to SLU for treatment of shortness of breath and respiratory failure.

Harris claims that after assuming her care, SLU carelessly and negligently failed to assign a wound care team and failed to implement measures to prevent the development of pressure ulcers for a patient at high risk.

She also claims the hospital carelessly and negligently failed to monitor and evaluate her so it could discover pressure ulcers and failed to initiate aggressive treatment once the pressure ulcers developed.

Harris claims SLU's negligent acts worsened her condition, causing her to suffer acute and prolonged physical and mental pain and suffering and causing her to become liable for great sums of money for medical and hospital care and treatment along with other expenses.

Harris also names her treating physicians as co-defendants, Dr. George Matuschak and Dr. Carl Kaplan.

Represented by John Hopkins of John J. Hopkins & Associates of Edwardsville, Harris is seeking damages in excess of $200,000, plus costs of the suit.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge David Hylla.
