A woman who underwent spinal surgery at Belleville Memorial Hospital on Oct. 3, 2000, claims that since then, screws on a stabilizing unit broke off causing material to migrate to other parts of her body.

Vivien L. Miller, according to a suit filed March 7 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, claims she suffered injuries to her neck, throat and shoulder after portions of an implanted cervical instrument broke off from the installation site.

Miller claims she learned of the failure on Aug. 19, 2006.

She names the hospital and Blackstone Medical, manufacturer of the cervical instrumentation, as defendants.

Represented by Bruce Cook of Belleville, Miller is seeking in excess of $225,000 in damages.

Miller claims the instrumentation was defectively manufactured and designed.
