Marian Twigg filed a medical malpractice suit against Alton Memorial Hospital alleging that patient Elizabeth Carter broke her hip at the hospital.
According to the complaint filed Feb. 20 in Madison County Circuit Court, Carter was a patient in the Alton Memorial Hatch Skilled Nursing Center on April 16, 2006.
Twigg is Carter's power of attorney.
Twigg claims Carter was being transferred from her bed to a wheelchair by Alton Memorial staff when she fell from the wheelchair breaking her right hip.
According to Twigg, the hospital was negligent by failing to take all necessary precautions to assure that Carter's environment remained as free of accident hazards as possible and failed to evaluate Carter to ensure that she received adequate supervision and assistance to prevent accidents.
Twigg claims that at the time of the fall, Carter was unable to sit unassisted.
She also claims Alton Memorial failed to provide necessary care and services in accordance with Carter's comprehensive assessment plan and failed to make objective observations of changes to determine the level of care Carter required.
Twigg claims Carter's injuries caused a marked deterioration of her prior physical condition in addition to pain and suffering, medical expenses and a permanent disability.
Represented by Robert Gregory of East Alton, Twigg is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus costs.
The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Barbara Crowder.
