A student at Bethalto High School filed a personal injury suit against Bethalto Community School District #8, alleging the school failed to provide equipment for lifting heavy things.

Earon Lasswell alleges he sustained injuries at school on March 13, 2007, while helping other shop class students lift a heavy component of a structure by hand.

Lasswell claims the school acted, or failed to act, in a willful and wanton manner by:

  • Permitting students in a shop class to build a heavy, two story structure, knowing that students would lift a heavy component of the structure by hand without adequate numbers to help lift;

  • Permitting students to lift a heavy component without adult supervision;

  • Permitting students to lift a heavy component without providing adequate lifting devices; and

  • Failing to maintain its property by providing a safe place to build structures in a shop environment and avoid unreasonable risks of harm to persons on the premises.

    Lasswell claims he sustained serious, permanent, painful and disabling injuries requiring medical care at substantial costs.

    Represented by Timothy Campbell of Godfrey, Lasswell is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus costs.

    The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Nicholas Byron.
