Highway pedestrian sues state trooper after being struck on interstate

A Fort Worth, Texas man who was allegedly struck by an Illinois State Police vehicle in Effingham filed a personal injury suit seeking damages in excess of $100,000 for his alleged injuries.

Clifton Board claims he was walking down Interstate 57 in Effingham on Sept. 3, 2006, when a vehicle being driver by state trooper Cristy Gilpin struck him, according to a suit filed Sept. 4 in United States District Court.

Board claims Gilpin negligently operated her vehicle without keeping a proper and sufficient lookout, drove too fast for conditions, failed to reduce her speed and failed to give an audible warning with her horn when such warning was reasonably necessary to ensure his safety.

He claims he sustained permanent injuries to his neck, back and legs, suffered and continues to suffer continuing pain and emotional suffering, lost wages and became liable for medical expenses.

His wife, Sharon Board, also is seeking damages in excess of $100,000 alleging she has suffered and continues to suffer a loss of the services, companionship, and other valuable contributions from her husband to the family unit.

The Boards are represented by Todd E. Schum of Manion, Devens, McFetridge & Schum in Champaign.

The case has been assigned to District Judge G. Patrick Murphy.
