Cincinnati Insurance Company filed suit against a former bookkeeper of Community Care Center of Mascoutah trying to recoup money paid on a claim.
According to a lawsuit filed by Cincinnati on Aug. 13 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, Marilyn McDaniel of Mascoutah stole or converted $9,146.15 from her employer and its residents.
"This conversion of funds or theft took place on a number of occasions during McDaniel's employment and was carried out by way of check forgery and/or the taking of cash not belonging to the defendant," the complaint states.
Cincinnati claims the nursing home discovered McDaniel's "acts of dishonesty" on Feb. 6 and subsequently terminated her and turned in a claim to them.
After a detailed investigation, Cincinnati issued a check for $8,146.15 to the nursing home.
Cincinnati is seeking a judgment against McDaniel for $8,146,15 in actual damages, $65,169.20 in punitive damages, interest and costs of the suit.
The insurer is represented by Dougglas Stultz of Hepler, Broom, MacDonald, Hebrank, True & Noce of Edwardsville.
