Two Madison County sheriff's deputies and one court security officer were injured in a scuffle on Aug. 3 at the Criminal Justice Center (CJC), while trying to apprehend a female suspect.
Jamilah Roland, 21, who came to the CJC to post bond on a warrant that was issued against her, left with an actice warrant for her arrest for a probation violation.
The deputies were injured by Roland's brother who apparently did not want to see his sister taken away in handcuffs.
Roland had brought $600 with her to avoid being taken into custody but after arriving learned the bond was more than she had with her.
Sgt. Raymond Botterbush was notified and went outside to place Roland into custody. Botterbush called for assistance when Roland's brother, David Burries, told Botterbush that his sister was not going to jail.
Deputy Jeffrey Lagemann and court security officer Nathan Weinel arrived to assist Botterbush and without warning, chaos ensued.
Roland escaped while deputies were distracted by Burries who began resisting arrest and using racial epithets directed toward the deputies. He was eventually maced and taken into custody and brought inside the CJC.
While trying to arrest Burries, Lagemann sustained a broken finger and small cuts to his face and arms. Botterbush and Weinel sustained minor scrapes and brusies along with torn clothes as Burries resisted arrest.
It was Lagemann's last assigned day at the courthouse. He was recently transfered back to the patrol division.
On Monday, Burries was charged with felony assault of a police officer and was not given bail. He is currenly at the Madison County Jail. He also had a warrant for his arrest for missing a court date in Cahokia on a traffic ticket.
His sister was charged with felony escape and posted bond.
