Cardiologist named in Madison County med mal suit

Granite City resident Darren K. Bone filed a medical malpractice suit against Belleville cardiologist Roop Lal, M.D., Cardiology Consultants and St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Bone claims Lal negligently performed pericardiocentesis, a surgical procedure to remove fluid from pericardial space, according to a suit filed Feb. 9 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Bone sought treatment for pericardial effusion -- an accumulation of excess fluid in the sac surrounding the heart -- on Feb. 9, 2005. He claims that during an operation at St. Elizabeth's, Lal negligently passed a catheter through his abdominal wall and into his liver.

He claims he was not made aware of Lal's alleged negligence until several days following the procedure.

He also claims Lal failed to control and secure the catheter within the pericardium and failed to monitor his condition after the operation to determine whether he suffered internal bleeding.

Seeking in excess of $300,000 in damages, Bone is represented by John T. Papa of Callis, Papa, Hale, Szewczyk & Danzinger in Granite City.
