Woman sues hospital for slipping on freshly mopped floor

Saint Anthony's Health Center

A woman who slipped on a freshly mopped floor while visiting her daughter in an Alton emergency room, has filed a personal injury suit against the hospital.

Dorothy Alexander is seeking in excess of $50,000 from Saint Anthony's Health Center alleging the hospital failed to use ordinary care in maintaining its premises.

Represented by Michael Glisson of Alton, Alexander filed suit in Madison County Circuit Court Jan. 31.

Alexander claims that on March 3, 2006, she slipped with great force causing her to sustain severe and permanent injuries to her left knee and ankle. She claims she has suffered great physical pain and mental anguish, medical expenses and the inability to perform her usual activities.

According to the suit, the hospital negligently failed to exercise reasonable care to keep its property in a safe condition and free from potential slipping hazards.

Alexander also claims Saint Anthony's failed to warn her and others that the floor in the emergency area was wet and failed to place a sign or other means of suitable protection in the area where she fell.

"The slippery condition of the area was in no way open and obvious to the plaintiff," the complaint states. "The plaintiff did not misuse the premises in any way."

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Andy Matoesian.
