Collonades Nursing Home named in wrongful death suit

An independent administrator claims Collonades Nursing Home in Granite City failed to provide adequate and properly supervised care to William Tedder, according a wrongful death suit filed Nov. 14 in Madison County Circuit Court.

The administrator, ABilly Brown, claims Tedder was a resident at the nursing home located in Granite City during the year 2004.

According to the complaint, Collonades:

  • failed to protect Tedder from neglect;

  • failed to timely notify Tedder's doctor of any significant changes to his condition which threatened his health, safety and welfare;

  • failed to provide 24-hour nursing services seven days a week to meet Tedder's needs after being admitted and while remaining at the facility;

  • failed to provide Tedder with the necessary treatment and services to prevent the development of skin disorders, staph infection, heart conditions and general overall health conditions; and

  • failed to ensure that a nursing plan based upon his needs and problems was established which contained long-term goals, short-term objectives and approaches to meet such needs and which was reviewed and revised once Tedder's needs changed.

    The estate also claims the nursing home failed to timely notify family members, including those having power of attorney, regarding his needs, injuries, patient status and the need for medical decisions including a need for a pace maker.

    Tedder's estate further alleges Collonades failed to maintain clinical records on Tedder in accordance with accepted standards of practice, failed to maintain Tedder so that he was clean, kept and resided in a room that was clean and failed to provide necessary care and services to attain or maintain his patient highest practicable physical, mental and pscho-physical well being in accordance with a comprehensive assessment and plan of care.

    According to the complaint, Tedder sustained injuries including skin infections, skin ulcerations, malnutrition, dehydration, congestive heart failure, exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypoxemia, pneumonia, renal insufficiency causing him to suffer loss of a normal life and death on Jan. 15, 2005.

    Represented by Tom Falb of Alton, Tedder's estate is seeking damages in excess of $100,000 and the right to amend the complaint to add a prayer of punitive damages, attorney fees and costs of the suit.
