Voter integrity testing gets dicey in St. Clair County

Voting irregularities are popping up in a couple of St. Clair County precincts, according to several election day observers.

Jimmy Morani, campaign manager for Appellate Court Judge Steve McGlynn, said people who voted early (between Oct. 16 and Nov. 2) were allowed opportunities to vote again in Belleville Precinct 5 and Caseyville Precinct 23.

He questioned why the comprehensive lists of early and absentee voters were not at polling places when they opened at 6 a.m., when his campaign obtained the lists from the County Clerk's office on Monday afternoon.

St. Clair County Clerk Bob Delaney said his office "was a little late" getting complete lists of early voters to all polling places. He said there were two lists --a partial list given to poll workers when they picked up supplies from the clerk's office and a supplemental list being delivered to the polls by sheriff's deputies on Tuesday morning.

At some polling places in Belleville and Caseyville, the lists had not been delivered by 11 a.m.

Testing the integrity of the early voting system may cause problems for those who dare try.

Delaney said the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department was looking for a woman who attempted to vote at Caseyville 23 Precinct even though she voted early.

In another incident, a man who stopped by Belleville 5 Precinct was offered a ballot, in spite of telling poll workers he had already voted early. He was told his new ballot would "knock out" the other.

In fact, an absentee ballot can be overriden by a voter who comes to a polling place to vote, but there is no such provision for early voting.
