Peoria neurosurgeon named in St. Clair County suit

A Peoria neurosurgeon and his practice are subjects of a medical malpractice lawsuit filed Sept. 1 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

According to the suit, Dzung Dinh, M.D. negligently performed back surgery on Sheila Roberts on Sept. 14, 2004, resulting in her paralysis.

Associated University Neurosurgeons, the only highly-specialized neurosurgical team in central Illinois, also is named in the suit.

Sheila Roberts' husband, Ronald Roberts, is a co-plaintiff seeking damages for loss of consortium.

The complaint does not state where the plaintiffs reside, but there is an Augusta, Ill. listing for Ronald and Sheila Roberts. Augusta is in Hancock County, located in the west central part of the state.

Represented by Joseph A. Bartholomew of Cook, Ysursa, Bartholomew, Brauer & Shevlin of Belleville, the Roberts are seeking in excess of $200,000 in damages, plus costs of the suit.

They claim Dinh and Associated University Neurosurgeons committed one or more of the following negligent acts or omissions:

  • failed to perform decompression surgery in an appropriate fashion;

  • injured the dura during surgery; and

  • caused injury to the nerves resulting in paralysis.
