An inmate serving four years at Menard Correctional Center in Chester was indicted by a federal grand jury in East St. Louis for threatening the life of the President of the United States.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Randy Massey, Troy Stafford made the threats between Jan. 1 and March 7, 2006, in Randolph County.
Stafford was indicted Aug. 18 for knowingly and willfully depositing for conveyance in the mail one or more letters containing a threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon President Bush.
Stafford allegedly wrote, "If you were to find a bullet waiting for you once you looked out of the white house how would that feel while you were looking out your window. Do you know what Nitrometheane, Tovax, cannon fuses, a few barrels, a spool of shock tube and Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer will do. . . Well do you Mr-President. Well Id say not till it's used on you or yours. This is your first and last warning from me and the National Socialist Movement of Freedom. So bombs away you're a coward bastard."
If convicted, Stafford would face not more than five years imprisonment or a fine of $250,000, or both and three years of supervised release.
Information for the indictment was obtained in an investigation conducted by Agent Derek Davis of the Secret Service.
The case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Hudson.
Stafford is currently serving a four year sentence for theft over $300.
He is expected to be paroled from the state of Illinois in September of 2007.
