Widower files wrongful death suit against Touchette

Touchette Regional Hospital in Centerville

Richard Steiner filed a wrongful death suit against Touchette Regional Hospital in Centerville and Dr. Louis Gary, alleging the defendants failed to consider his wife's risk factors for an aortic dissection.

According to the complaint filed in St. Clair County Circuit Court Feb. 3, Steiner's wife, Glenda, entered Touchette on Feb. 3, 2004.

Steiner claims despite the fact Touchette had a duty to render hospital and medical services consistent with the medical requirements of the patients, it failed to observe or access signs and complaints that were typical and classical for Glenda's conditions Glenda.

He also claims the defendants failed to intervene on behalf of Glenda to see that proper medical care and attention was being given to her, failed to timely order appropriate tests or transfer her to a facility that could undertake the proper tests, failed to do a complete examination in order to gain a full and knowledgeable understanding of Glenda's condition and failed to maintain observation on Glenda for a sufficient time frame.

Aortic dissection is a condition in which there is bleeding into and along the wall of the aorta, the major artery from the heart. This condition may also involve abnormal widening or ballooning of the aorta.

Steiner also claims that Touchette failed to render hospital services consistent with the medical requirements of his wife, failed to admit her for further medical care, or failed to transfer her to another facility for medical care and allowed Glenda to believe that she had a minor ailment.

According to Steiner, Glenda died the next day, depriving him of the comfort, society and valuable services she would have contributed and performed prior to her death.

Steiner also claims Glenda endured great pain and suffering prior to her death and also claims that he has become liable for medical expenses for medical, drug and funeral expenses.

Represented by Jeffrey Ezra of Collinsville, Steiner is seeking damages in excess of $300,000 plus all costs of the suit.
