An Olin employee who was injured in a fire on Jan. 10 filed a suit against the seller, provider, servicer and installer of a fire extinguishing system in Madison County Circuit Court Oct. 31.

Seeking damages in excess of $300,000, Jerry Harty of Godfrey claims an extinguisher produced by Fire Safety, Inc., Kidde PLC, and United Technologies failed to work when a fire broke out. Harty was a welder at the Olin Brass Casting plant in East Alton.

Harty claims the fire suppression system was defectively designed and manufactured because the heat sensors failed to detect the fire and failed to manually discharge.

According to Harty, he suffered severe and permanent burns to his face, chest and arms, suffered great pain and suffering, lost wages, and became liable for medical expenses.

Harty is represented by Matt Chapman and Greg Becker of Becker, Galanti and Schroader in Granite City.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Daniel Stack.
