Belleville woman represents self in case against doctor

Belleville resident Rhonda K. Davis filed a medical malpractice suit against her doctor, Michael Guignon, M.D. on April 22 in St. Clair County Circuit Court seeking damages in excess of $50,000.

Davis will represent herself in the case.

She claims that on April 25, 2003, Guignon performed outpatient surgery at Belleville Memorial Hospital to treat stress incontinence, which is an involuntary loss of urine that occurs during physical activity, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise.

After the "SPARC tension-free urethral suspension" surgery, Davis called Guignon’s office several times concerning pain in her pubic bone, buttocks and groin area. She called an ambulance to take her to the hospital on May 8, 2003, because the pain became so intense, according to the complaint.

Davis claims she was admitted for pain and high fever, and alleges that pain never existed before the surgery but still does to this day.

“There was a duty on the part of Guignon to diagnose, care and treat Davis in accordance with accepted standards of medical practice,” the complaint states.

Though the complaint does not list specific injuries, Davis claims she suffers permanent injuries as a result of Dr. Guignon's negligence.
