Gateway Regional Medical Center
A patient at Gateway Regional Medical Center who claims he became paralyzed after surgery for an aneurysm filed suit against the hospital April 14 in Madison County Circuit Court.
Duane Adams is seeking at least $600,000 from Gateway Regional and vascular surgeon John Petrovich, M.D. and anesthesiologist Jeffrey Kidd, M.D.
According to the medical malpractice complaint, Adams was admitted to Gateway for the surgical treatment of an abdominal aortic aneurysm with bilateral common illac artery aneurysms on Aug. 3, 2004.
During the procedure he developed a right pneumothorax for which Dr. Kidd inserted a chest tube in order to resolve the issue.
Adams claims that following the medical treatment by the defendants he experienced paralysis, paraparesis, lethargy, acute respitory failure, shortness of breath, wheezing, seizures, obtunded mental status, E. Coli and ileus.
The suit alleges Gateway failed to ensure:
Adams suffered severe pain and suffering, physical and mental disability, prolonged and recurrent institutionalization, his medical condition getting worse, and a lowering of his overall life expectancy, according to the complaint.
He also claims that he has past and future medical expenses.
Adams' wife, Mary, also claims she has been deprived of the society, support and services of her spouse, debts and expenses owing to medical bills, and that she has expended substantial mental and physical effort to personally provide care to her spouse.
