A Granite city woman filed suit against her surgeon, Dr. John Petrovich and General and Vascular Surgical Associates, alleging he severed a portion of her bile duct and wrapped her esophagus too tightly during surgery two years ago.
Sherry Bell, represented by Belleville personal injury attorney Michael McGlynn, alleges Dr. Petrovich made the mistake while performing a cholecystectomy--gall bladder removal--and nissen fundoplication--stomach and esophagus surgery--on Dec. 10, 2002.
Bell is seeking at least $50,000 from the Granite City surgeon.
McGlynn is the brother of Stephen McGlynn, who is vying for chairmanship of the Illinois Republican Party. He filed suit on behalf of Bell on Dec. 10 in Madison County Circuit Court.
Typically, a cholecystectomy is performed through an incision in the right side of the upper abdomen. More recently the surgery has been carried out through a laparoscope employing three or four small incisions.
After complaining of complications, Bell alleges Dr. Petrovich performed further surgery on Dec 18, 2002, in which he removed approximately one liter of bile.
During that surgery, Bell alleges Dr. Petrovich sewed her bile duct completely shut in the process of repairing it.
She claims that as a result of Dr. Petrovich’s negligence she has suffered severe pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages, disability, and loss of enjoyment of life, both past and in the future.
Bell, who demands a trial by jury, is seeking at least $50,000 in damages and any other relief the court deems appropriate.
The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge George Moran.
