A blood draw turned into something more serious at St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland, when a girl allegedly suffered a broken wrist at the hands of a laboratory technician.

Chad and Jennifer Little filed a lawsuit Aug. 15 in the Madison County Circuit Court against St. Joseph's Hospital, an affiliate of Hospital Sisters Health System, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on Aug. 16, 2012, the couple's minor child, Olivia Little, was a patient at the hospital laboratory for a blood draw and during the procedure, a lab technician applied significant pressure to the girl's wrist causing a fracture.

The lawsuit states the hospital was negligent in training employees the proper techniques for pediatric blood draw, in failing to adequately supervise lab technicians during blood draws, in failing to draw blood within established standards of care and in failing to diagnose the significant injury caused by staff.

As a result of that negligence, Olivia suffered an injury that led to disability, disfigurement and increased risk of future harm, the suit states.

The plaintiffs are seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus costs. The couple is represented by Jessica Koester of The Law Offices of Jessica Koester LLC in Edwardsville.
