Door stop mechanism blamed for causing fall

A door stop is blamed for causing a woman’s injuries during a fall at an Edwardsville eatery.

Cecilia Chiaffino filed a lawsuit March 21 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Red Robin International, doing business as Red Robin.

In her complaint, Chiaffino claims she was visiting the Red Robin at 6699 Edwardsville Crossing Drive in Edwardsville on April 4, 2012, when she tripped over a door stop mechanism that had caught her foot.

Because of her fall, Chiaffino incurred medical costs, lost wages, suffered disability and experienced pain and suffering, according to the complaint.

She blames Red Robin for causing her injuries, saying it negligently maintained the entryway of the restaurant, failed to inspect the floor, failed to place the door stop mechanisms in a safe manner on the entryway of the restaurant and failed to warn of the presence of the mechanisms.

Chiaffino is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs. She is being represented by Doug Mendenhall and Christopher Mendenhall of Smith, Mendenhall, Selby and Cole in Alton.

Madison County Circuit Court case number 14-L-487.
