Patient alleges doctor removed wrong mass

Medical malpractice 08

EDWARDSVILLE – A Madison County woman alleges she had to have an additional surgery because a physician failed to remove the correct mass.

Elizabeth Hoechst filed a complaint on July 25 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Michael Bonebrake, M.D. and OSF St. Antony's Health Center, alleging professional negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in November 2016, Bonebrake mistakenly removed a breast mass that was benign instead of the mass that was to be excised. The suit states that on Jan. 11, she underwent an additional surgery to remove the suspicious right breast mass.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to review her medical chart in its entirety, failed to identify the correct breast mass to be removed and performed an operation beyond the consent of the patient.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment for an amount of more than $50,000, plus cost of suit and other relief as may be appropriate under the circumstances.

She is represented by Lanny Darr of Darr Law Offices LTD in Alton.
