Woman says distracted driver caused accident that harmed her

BELLEVILLE – A woman is suing over injuries she allegedly suffered in the course of an automobile accident. She is citing negligence.

Teresa Johnson filed the suit April 6 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Jamar Edwards.

On June 17, 2015, the plaintiff was operating a motor vehicle and was legally stopped at a red light at the intersection of East Lincoln and South Illinois streets. according to the suit. The defendant was driving his vehicle behind the plaintiff's when he allegedly failed to stop and struck the her car, causing her serious injury, the suit claims.

The defendant claimed that immediately prior to the collision he had dropped something that diverted his attention away from the road, according to the suit.

The complaint further lists 14 instances of alleged negligence on the part of the defendant that led to the collision. The suit says the defendant's negligence caused her permanent injuries and claims she will be hindered from attending to her usual duties, and will continue to lose wages, income and benefits.

 

Her vehicle has been damaged as well, the suit says.

The plaintiff seeks judgment in excess of $50,000 plus court costs. She is represented by Deanna L. Litzenburg of Mathis, Marifian & Richter Ltd. in Belleville.
