Madison County man sues Gateway Foundation after medication allegedly left him impotent

A Madison County man is suing Gateway Foundation, one of its doctors and a pharmaceutical company, claiming a prescribed drug left him impotent.

Charles Hamilton filed a complaint on July 15 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Gateway Foundation Inc., Hetal H. Amin, M.D., and Teva Pharmaceuticals USA Inc. alleging medical malpractice, products liability and breach of warranty.

The complaint states that on July 20, 2013, Hamilton developed priapism, a penile erection that is not caused by excessive blood flow and/or sexual stimulation, and which can cause serious injury to male genital organs.

The complaint alleges that priapism is a known side effect of Trazadone, which defendant Amin, practicing at Gateway Foundation, had prescribed to Hamilton in the summer of 2012.

The complaint further alleges that Amin did not follow up with Hamilton about his medical condition or the effects of Trazadone but kept refilling the prescriptions and, as a result, violated the standard of care by not re-evaluating Hamilton while he was taking Trazadone to see whether signs or symptoms of priapism had developed.

Hamilton alleges he suffered injuries requiring an operation and placement of a pump, leaving him effectively impotent, according to the complaint.

Hamilton is seeking compensation from each defendant in excess of $50,000, plus costs of the suit.

He is represented by Ronald Roth of Roth Law Offices LLC in Granite City, Illinois.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number 15-L-399.
