Motorcyclist reaches $300,000 settlement in collision case

A Staunton man alleging severe injuries from a motorcycle accident has reached a settlement in his personal injury case for nearly $300,000.

Matthew W. Mullenix and Bridget E. Mullenix filed their March 3 lawsuit against Barbara J. Bassett, claiming she pulled out in front of Matthew’s 2007 Harley Davidson with her 1994 Ford F-150 pickup truck on Aug. 21.

The Mullenix’s claim Matthew was riding west on Staunton Road in Staunton when Bassett allegedly pulled out onto Staunton Road directly in front of the plaintiff without warning from a parking lot.

“In an effort to try to avoid colliding with defendant Bassett’s vehicle, plaintiff Matthew W. Mullenix, was required to swerve and/or take other evasive action causing him to lose control of, and crash, his motorcycle,” the suit states.

As a result of the accident, Matthew allegedly suffered severe and permanent injuries to his left shoulder, left knee, left hip, hands, arms and legs.

“We are pleased that we have been able to successfully conclude this matter for Matt and his family,” said plaintiff attorney Troy Walton of Schoen Walton Telken & Foster in East St. Louis.

Although Mullenix has made progress in his recovery, “the accident caused a serious disruption in Matt’s life,” Walton said.

Walton cautioned drivers to keep a watchful eye for motorcyclists.

“With summer in full effect, more motorcyclists will be sharing our roads and highways,” Walton said. “Awareness keeps us all safer, and with more attention to motorcycles on the road, accidents like Matt’s can be avoided.”
