Lenscrafters store in Champaign blamed for girl's injury in St. Clair Co. suit

A 50-pound mirror at a Lenscrafters store failed to remain attached to a wall and fell on top of a six-year-old girl, prompting her parents to file a lawsuit against the store.

Monica and Lance Campbell filed a lawsuit Oct. 18 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Lenscrafters.

The Campbells allege their daughter, who is identified only as S.C., had accompanied her father to a Lenscrafters store Champaign on Oct. 20, 2011.

“S.C. sat on the floor of the store to read her book while her father shopped for glasses, which were housed in a wall display,” the suit states. “Without cause or provocation by the minor child or any other person, a mirror detached from the wall and fell on top of the six-year-old minor child, landing without breaking, on her head, neck and body where she sat on the floor.”

Lance Campbell removed the mirror from his daughter’s head and rushed her to the Carle Hospital emergency room, according to the complaint. While in the store and again on the way to the hospital, S.C. lost consciousness, the suit states.

Because of the incident, S.C. suffered injuries, trauma and disfigurement to her head, face and neck; endured pain and suffering; and incurred medical costs, the complaint says. She also suffered emotional distress and lost her normal life, her parents claim.

The Campbells blame Lenscrafters for causing their daughter’s injuries, saying the store negligently failed to ensure that the mirror was properly attached to the wall, failed to keep its premises safe and failed to maintain the mirror by checking it was held properly to the wall.

In their complaint, the Campbells seek a judgment of more than $50,000.

Leslie A. Wood of Wood Law Office in Glen Carbon will be representing them.
