Pregnant woman sues Walmart claiming she slipped on liquid, 'did the splits' and fractured hip

A woman claims she was pregnant when she slipped on a wet floor at an O'Fallon Walmart and fractured her hip.

Clara Wright filed a lawsuit Aug. 22 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Walmart Stores Inc.

Wright says she was shopping at the O'Fallon Walmart in August 2011 and was looking for an open checkout lane. According to the lawsuit, Wright chose a lane where a cold beverage machine had been leaking and left a slippery liquid on the floor. Wright, who was eight months pregnant at the time, claims she slipped on the substance and "did the splits."

As a result of the fall, Wright allegedly tore her labrum, broke her hip and tore muscles. Wright says she was in pain from the injuries for the remainder of her pregnancy.

The woman accuses the store of negligence for allowing the beverage machine to leak without cleaning up the mess or warning customers of its dangers. Wright asks for more than $50,000 in damages for medical bills, loss of income and court fees.

Attorney Michael L. McGlynn of Belleville represents Wright.
