Driver accused of rear-ending vehicle at Belleville stoplight

A woman has filed suit against the driver who she claims rear-ended the vehicle in which she was riding while it was stopped at a red light.

Mary Riester claims she was riding in a vehicle traveling south on North Belt West near its intersection with East Main Street on April 16, 2011, when the vehicle stopped at a red light. Suddenly, defendant Theodore Fields rear-ended her vehicle.

Because of the collision, Riester endured severe and permanently disabling injuries, suffered spinal injuries and experienced great pain and mental anguish, according to the complaint filed Feb. 26 in St.
Clair County Circuit Court. She also incurred medical costs and was prevented from attending her usual employment, the suit states.

Field negligently failed to keep a proper distance between his vehicle and the one in which Riester was riding, failed to keep a proper lookout, drove too fast and failed to reduce his speed to avoid a collision, the complaint says.

In her complaint, Riester is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs.

Bruce R. Cook of Cook, Ysursa, Bartholomew, Brauer and Shevlin in Belleville will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 13-L-104.
