Alton Memorial sued over dog bite treatment

A patient accuses an Alton hospital and medical staff of negligence for allegedly mistreating a dog bite.

Kellie Cummins filed a lawsuit Feb. 19 in Madison County Circuit Court against Dr. Angela Holbrook, Kelley Borth, Alton Memorial Hospital and BC Illinois Emergency Physicians LLP.

Cummins says she went to Alton Memorial Hospital on Sept. 15, 2012 for treatment of a dog bite. She was treated in the emergency room by Dr. Holbrook and Borth, a certified nurse practitioner, according to the petition.

Cummins claims the defendants "negligently and carelessly failed to irrigate the dog bite wound, negligently and carelessly closed the dog bite would, failed to prescribe prophylactic antibiotics in the ER and failed to provide appropriate treatment for dog bite." As a result, the patient says she suffered permanent pain, mental anguish, disability and disfigurement.

Cummins asks to be awarded more than $300,000 in damages to compensate for medial expenses and lost wages. She is also requesting court costs.

Attorney Samantha S. Unsell of Keefe & Keefe in Belleville represents her.
