Von Nida will become county's first new circuit clerk in two decades

Voters on Tuesday chose Madison County Clerk Mark Von Nida as their next circuit clerk, according to election results from the clerk’s office.

Von Nida, a Democrat who has served as the county clerk since 1997, won the race by more than 24,00 votes. He received 70,842 votes while his Republican opponent, St. Jacob attorney John Barberis Jr., received 46,646 votes.

Von Nida will be the first new Madison County circuit clerk in two decades. Longtime circuit clerk Matt Melucci was first elected to the post in 1992 and announced prior to his May death that he would not seek reelection.

It was not immediately clear Tuesday night as to who will take over for Von Nida as county clerk when he assumes the role of circuit clerk.
