Gateway Regional and doctors sued over alleged overdose of pain reliever

The wife of a recently deceased man seeks more than $1 million from doctors and the hospital where she says her husband died of an alleged overdose on a pain reliever.

Vickie Chastain filed a lawsuit Aug. 24 in Madison County Circuit Court against Granite City Hospital Company doing business as Gateway Regional Medical Center, Drs. Timothy Hipskind and Shirin Raina and RN Dorothy Lee.

In her complaint, Vickie Chastain alleges her husband, James Chastain, arrived at Gateway Regional Medical Center while suffering from congestive heart failure on Aug. 24, 2010. While at the hospital, the defendants prescribed James Chastain the pain reliever Dilaudid, according to the complaint.

However, James Chastain ended up overdosing on the medication while at the hospital, causing his death, the suit states.

Because of her husband's death, Vickie Chastain has been deprived of his services, the complaint says.

In her 20-count complaint, Vickie Chastain seeks a judgment of more than $1 million, plus costs.

George H. Albers of Roth Law Offices in Granite City will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 12-L-1369.
