Five former East St. Louis firefighters are suing the City for alleged unpaid benefits.
William Fennoy, Thomas Grimmett, Darryl Grimmett, Daniel Haskenhoff and Edward Smith filed the lawsuit Jan. 12 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against the city of East St. Louis.
According to the complaint, the firefighters were all employed by the city for decades and subject to the collective bargaining agreement. The CBA determines how firefighters are paid for unused sick leave, vacation time, work out of rank and compensatory time. All five firefighters claim they accumulated hours in all those areas and, when they ended their employment, asked to be paid those benefits.
However, after being promised to be paid by December 2011 the group alleges it has yet to receive payment. The former employees accuse the City of breach of contract and ask to be awarded the nearly $258,000 in benefits they say they are owed plus court fees.
Attorney Jack Carey of Belleville is representing the group.
