Father sues two drivers over son's death; Claims both were driving drunk

Cannady

The father of a St. Clair County man who was killed in a car crash says the driver of the car his son was riding in and the driver of the car that allegedly crashed into them were both driving drunk.

Pat C. Sargent, on behalf of his son, Chaz R. Sargent, filed a lawsuit May 18 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Crystal M. Fuehne and Melissa Weiser. Marvin B. Fuehne, guardian of Crystal M. Fuehne, is also named as a defendant.

According to the complaint, Chaz Sargent was a passenger in the car driven by Weiser in May 2009 in Clinton County. As they were driving north on Emerald Road, Crystal Fuehne, driving west on Keyesport Road, allegedly failed to stop at the intersection of the two roads and crashed into them. Sargent says his son died as a result of his injuries received in the crash. Sargent argues both drivers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Sargent accuses Fuehne and Weiser of negligence and of violating Illinois' Wrongful Death Act. He is asking for more than $300,000 in damages for medical and funeral expenses plus court costs.

Attorney Thomas B. Cannady of Belleville is representing Sargent. They ask for a jury trial.
