Consulting group says it wasn't paid for helping to lower property assessments

Several St. Clair County real estate companies are accused of failing to pay for work done by a consulting company.

McQuellon Consulting Inc. filed a lawsuit May 9 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against HSM Development Corporation, Moline Real Estate Inc. and Elgin Real Estate LLC. Swansea Real Estate Inc. and HSM Investment LLC are also named as defendants.

According to the petition, McQuellon Consulting is hired by property owners to help get assessment values of properties lowered in order to reduce property taxes. The company says clients agree to pay a percentage of the reduction in value.

McQuellon says it contracted with HSM Development, who owns all the defendants listed above, to challenge the assessed value of several properties owned by the defendants. McQuellon claims the contracts began in June 2008 and continued through April 2010.

McQuellon contends it was not paid for several property assessments they were able to successfully challenge and have reduced. The consulting group says it is owed more than $67,000 plus interest and court fees.

Attorneys Matthew J. Rossiter and Andrew W. Callahan of St. Louis are representing McQuellon.
