Belleville nursing home named in wrongful death complaint

A Belleville nursing home is accused of causing the death of a woman living there.

Carol Kiefer, executor of the estate of Doris I. Schaeperkoetter, filed a lawsuit in St. Clair County Circuit Court against The Lincoln Home Inc. and its owner, Weiss Management Group LLC. Drs. Jawad Ali Khan and Mahrukh Khan are named as respondents in discovery.

According to the petition, Schaepperkoetter was a resident of The Lincoln Home, a long-term care facility, from July 2008 through January 2010. During that time, Kiefer alleges, Schaepperkoetter was not given the proper supervised care she was expected to receive.

Because of the improper care, the lawsuit states, Schaepperkoetter suffered dehydration, sepsis and hypoxia -- all of which allegedly led to her death in January 2010.

Kiefer accuses the nursing home of negligence and wrongful death. She contends The Lincoln Home and Weiss Management Group also violated Illinois' Nursing Home Care Act.

The suit asks for more than $200,000 in damages for medical expenses along with court costs.

Attorney Staci M. Yandle, of O'Fallon, is representing Keifer. They ask for a jury trial.
