Memorial Hospital, emergency physicians named in wrongful death complaint

The husband of a recently deceased woman blames doctors at Memorial Hospital and Belleville Emergency Physicians for causing his wife's sudden death.

James E. Carter filed a lawsuit Jan. 6 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Protestant Memorial Medical Center, Belleville Emergency Physicians and Dr. William Lauth.

Carter claims his wife, Donna M. Carter, died on Jan. 10, 2009, after Luth allegedly failed to timely ensure an intubation, which would have allowed the opening of Donna Carter's breathing tube, during her arrest on Jan. 6, 2009.

Because of Donna Carter's death, her next-of-kin have suffered grief and sorrow and have been deprived of her services, companionship, comfort, instruction, guidance, counsel, training, love and support, according to the complaint.

In his three-count complaint, James E. Carter seeks a judgment of more than $150,000, plus costs.

Joseph A. Bartholomew of Cook, Ysursa, Bartholomew, Brauer and Shevlin will be representing him.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 11-L-07.
