Metal bar stool flung at Alton bartender, suit claims

An Alton bartender alleges she suffered severe injuries to her face and head after a patron struck her with a bar stool.

Dawn R. Sloan filed a lawsuit Oct. 6 in Madison County Circuit Court against David Edward Harris.

Sloan claims she worked as a bartender at Brenda's Bar and Grill on June 30, 2009, when Harris suddenly picked up a metal bar stool, swung it and struck Sloan in the head and neck.

In addition to her injuries, Sloan suffered extreme physical and emotional pain and suffering and incurred medical costs, according to the complaint. She also lost earnings, the suit states.

Sloan blames Harris for causing her injuries, saying he negligently swung a bar stool, failed to keep a proper lookout before swinging the stool and failed to warn the plaintiffs of the danger of his actions.

In her two-count complaint, Sloan seeks a judgment of more than $15,000, actual damages of $15,000 and punitive damages of more than $100,000, plus costs.

Carol L. Cagle of Alton will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-1035.
