Cahokia school district case over faulty security measures, student sexual assault stalls

A suit against Cahokia Community Unit School District No. 187 filed by the mother of a student allegedly sexually assaulted by a school intruder has stalled in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

The last move in the case brought by plaintiff Precilla Rice-Hilliard was a June 2 order in which the plaintiff dropped a motion for sanctions.

Rice-Hilliard, also identified as Rice in the file, is suing for more than $200,000 and other relief.

The plaintiff claims the school district failed to properly uphold its duty of care to her daughter.

The suit claims the plaintiff's daughter was sexually assaulted while in a Cahokia school by a man who gained access to the building through an unlocked door.

The incident allegedly occurred in January 2008.

The district denies the plaintiff's claims.

The sanctions move was filed after the plaintiff claimed Cahokia had failed to provide answers to interrogatories and other discovery questions as ordered by the court.

Robert Forbes and Christopher Hoffmann represent the plaintiff.

Donald Ohl and Stephanie Galetti represent the school district.

The case is St. Clair case number 09-L-009.
