Alton landscaper says former employee took clients

An Alton landscaping company has filed suit against one of its former employees, alleging she attempted to steal clients away from it.

Tropical Decor, a company that works on interior and exterior plant care service and installations, claims Chris Yates worked for it on March 11, 2010, when she contacted clients in an attempt to solicit their business.

According to the complaint filed April 9 in Madison County Circuit Court, Chris Yates used a confidential client list to contact Tropical Decor's clients and try to attract them to her new company, Elite Tropical Design.

When talking to Tropical Decor's customers, Yates informed them that Tropical Decor's business practices were substandard, the suit states.

Tropical Decor claims Yates took its property without its permission and says she caused it to incur financial losses and to experience a tainted relationship with its customers.

In its seven-count suit, Tropical Decor is seeking a judgment in excess of $350,000, plus costs.

Allen L. Napp of Schrempf, Kelly, Napp and Darr in Alton will be representing it.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-406.
