Skin cells killed by negligent IV infiltration, suit claims

A woman blames doctors at Alton Memorial Hospital for causing the death of skin cells on her right arm.

Sheri L. Nizinski filed a lawsuit Jan. 27 in Madison County Circuit Court against Alton Memorial Hospital.

Nizinski says doctors at the hospital treated her for a condition, which she does not specify, but doctors there allegedly negligently inserted an IV into her right arm and infiltrated calcium chloride into it.

The IV caused necrosis of the right skin on Nizinski's arm, which is the premature death of cells and living tissue, according to the complaint.

Because of the incident, Nizinski suffered injuries to her right arm; experienced pain, suffering and disability; and incurred medical costs, the suit states.

In the two-count suit, Nizinski seeks an unspecified judgment, plus costs.

John J. Hopkins of John J. Hopkins and Associates in Edwardsville will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-76.
