Illinois 161 collision is subject of suit

A woman has filed suit against the driver who she says struck her vehicle, causing her to miss numerous days from work.

Charmelle Brown claims she was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier south on Illinois 161 near its intersection with Carlyle Avenue in Belleville on March 9 when Cassidy Gardiner, who was driving a 2001 Ford south on the same street, rear-ended her.

Because of the accident, Brown sustained injuries to her right knee, neck, back and head; incurred great pain and mental anguish; and suffered disability, according to the complaint. In addition, she lost her normal life and missed numerous working days, the suit states.

Gardiner negligently failed to keep her vehicle under proper control, failed to take evasive action to avoid an accident, failed to maintain a proper lookout, failed to apply her brakes, drove in an unsafe manner, failed to reduce her speed and drove too closely to Brown's vehicle, the complaint says.

Brown is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs.

Steven E. Katzman of Katzman and Associates in Belleville will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-650.
